FORWARD TEACHING

My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is based on my values of fostering respect, creativity, excellence and citizenship in the school environment and beyond.  I truly believe that every student has the potential to learn.  As such, I strive to build programs by investigating each student’s strengths and needs and developing lessons which allow students to thrive.  I embrace my roles of ESL/ELD and Resource teacher whole heartedly and continue to strive to grow and learn.    My planning is anchored to the achievement chart and the best practices of the Board, along with the language acquisition models found in the STEP program.  I also provide my students with opportunities to investigate the 21st century fluencies they need to succeed.

My positions have gone above and beyond classroom support, reaching for support systems beyond the classroom for students at risk.. I have participated in and taken a leadership role in Professional Learning Communities. I have been active in developing and encouraging extracurricular opportunities for our ELLs.   I have supported the administrative staff, taking new students on tours of the school, helping with the coordination of cultural translators when necessary and helping to create ways to engage and support the needs of our community by inviting parents into the school for workshops. I have begun to build programs to help teachers better empathize with ELLs and to better help those students who have experienced trauma. My position is one of whole school support and often that support reaches beyond the school walls.

I have completed, with honours ESL Part 1, Special Education Part 1 and  Librarianship Part 1 where the bulk of my learning is in 21st Century Fluencies.  I endeavor to keep current to help my students as technology is updated, improved, adapted and changed.  We have fun in my classroom; engaged students are active learners.

My classroom and my ideals are transparent, and I am always open for discussion, growth and suggestions.  As a  forward teacher I must always be ready and eager for what is to come in a constant cycle of reflective practice.
